With the launch of projects for Mason Editions, Saba Italia, , Doppia Firma, My Home Collection, Wall & Decò, Porro, and Pottocco, this year’s Salone del Mobile marked an important milestone for Serena Confalonieri. To put it simply, this Milan-based designer's career is totally blowing up. To celebrate her well-deserved success, we asked her to take over our Instagram and answer some quick questions about her creative process. Check it out!

 

Audrey Kadjar: If you could choose just one color for your designs, which one would it be and why?

Serena Confalonieri: Aquamarine. It’s like looking at the sky and at the sea in the same time. It gives a sense of calm.

AK: When did you decide that you wanted to be a designer?

SC: Actually I haven’t decided yet… It’s simply happening.

AK: What research is currently most informing your practice?

SC: Tribal cultures.

AK: What would you be doing if you weren’t a designer?

SC: Tennis player or drummer. I am poorly skilled at both activities, but I really enjoy them!

AK: What is your definition of good design?

SC: Strong concept; simple shape; good material.

AK: When do you feel the most creative?

SC: When I’m on vacation. A new place and free time are key ingredients for creativity.

AK: Which gallery or museum inspires you most?

SC: The Natural History Museum in New York.

AK: What is your favorite magazine?

SC: I like The Plant, a design magazine related to the botanical word.

AK: Which contemporary artist or designer do you most admire?

SC: Hella Jongerius and Raw Edges.

AK: Which three designs are topping your must-have list these days?

SC: Maralunga Sofa by Vico Magistretti for Cassina; Camaleonda Sofa by Mario Bellini for B&B Italia; and Transience Mirrors by David Derksen and Lex Pott.

AK: If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring designer, what would it be?

SC: Never never, never give up. And don’t listen to anybody’s opinion. Take decisions and make mistakes but don’t have regrets.

AK: What are your future projects?

SC: Relax after Milano Design Week, of course. And start working on a collection of glass accessories.
