Contemporary Design

Hand-knotted in wool, this 5x6 Modern Classics rug by Rug&Kilim draws inspiration from antique Peking rugs, Chinese Art Deco rugs, and similar period pieces of the 1920s Chinoiserie style. On the Design: Admirers of the craft will appreciate this execution of the open field and pictorial style alike—the former underscored by navy blue tones while the latter enjoys cream white, beige, and lighter ice blue hues. The field corners (or spandrels) repeat an illustration of vases with flowers and tables like those seen in several designs since the mid-19th century. Keen eyes will further admire the look of an abrashed striae in the field and border alike, further lending an elegant and time-honored look to this contemporary homage. Altogether it’s a piece as deeply personal in its subtext as it is in the details and beauties that distinguish it in our craft—an homage to a rich history of craft and culture.
