About This Piece

Vintage Design

This impressive royal sedan chair, dating to the 18th century, was designed for transporting royalty and high-ranking nobility in Portugal. Constructed from finely carved wood, it is richly painted and gilded, showcasing the skill of master craftsmen of the period. The structure is further enhanced by a leather exterior covering, which provided durability and protection, while the interior is lined with fabric to ensure comfort during travel. The chair is decorated with a prominent coat of arms, emphasizing its ceremonial role and association with aristocratic or royal patrons.

Measuring 142 × 136 × 82 cm, it represents both elegance and authority in equal measure. Such sedan chairs were symbols of wealth and prestige, and comparable examples are preserved in the Royal National Coach Museum in Lisbon today.
