Cavael studied typography and applied graphics from 1924 to 1926 at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. His talent will soon be recognized because he will receive a scholarship during his studies. After completing his training, he takes the profession of teacher for applied graphics at the municipal commercial school in Frankfurt and undertakes the first didactic attempts with abstract painting. During a visit to the Bauhaus in Dessau in 1930, he met Kandinsky. A friendly contact arises, which remains even after the emigration of Kandinsky to Paris. In the same year, Cavael will be released from the teaching post due to the emergency regulations by Chancellor Brüning, who leads to austerity measures. He moves to Berlin, where he settles as a freelance artist. In 1933 his first big exhibition took place in the Braunschweig Castle together with Joseph Albers. However, the National Socialists close them on the opening day. Both painters receive exhibition ban. Cavael moves to Garmisch and continues to paint abstractly. In 1936 he was denounced and caught in the Dachau concentration camp for nine months. The ban on painting is now also being banned from the exhibition, because you exclude the artist from the imperial culture chamber. After the end of the war, he started again with his artistic work, which in the prohibition years could only take place in hidden. In 1949, Cavael founded the Zen 49, the most important artist community of the non -female direction in southern Germany, with builders, winter, violinist and other artists. Cavael moved from Garmisch to Munich in 1954. He receives a visiting professorship at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg and teaches from 1956-73 at the Munich Volkshochschule. During these years, the artist was honored, the art prize of the city of Munich was awarded to him in 1957, in 1958 he received an invitation to the Biennale in Venice and he received the first prize of the international graphic trial in Grenchen/Switzerland. The Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, the Kestnergesellschaft Hannover and the Lenbachhaus in Munich appreciate its work with solo exhibitions. A year before his death, the Lovis Corinth Prize of the artist guild is awarded. Cavael is one of the most important representatives of unfortunate painting in Germany.
