Designed by Hans Due and introduced by Fog & Mørup in 1977, the Phister wall lamp is an iconic example of late Scandinavian Modern design, combining playful post-war optimism with exceptional functional engineering.
Distinguished by its bold geometric form, the lamp is composed of two intersecting cylinders, each cut at opposing 45-degree angles to create a sculptural yet highly practical lighting object. The clean, minimalist silhouette reflects Hans Due's industrial design philosophy, where every element serves both a functional and aesthetic purpose.
The fixed upper cylinder houses the electrical components and incorporates the original cylindrical push switch positioned on the top of the lamp for intuitive operation—particularly convenient when used as a bedside reading light. The lower cylindrical section forms the adjustable shade and rotates through 360 degrees, allowing the light to be directed precisely where required. A narrow gap between the two cylinders creates a striking illuminated halo when the lamp is switched on, adding another subtle design detail.
Although Hans Due originally conceived the Phister in metal, Fog & Mørup elected to manufacture it in moulded ABS plastic, creating a lighter, more affordable lamp aimed at a younger audience. The result became one of the company's most distinctive late-1970s designs. Produced in a vibrant palette including red, yellow ochre, dark green, light grey, and brown, original coloured examples have become increasingly sought after by collectors.
An additional feature of the design is its versatility: integrated mounting slots allow each lamp to be used either as a wall light or freestanding as a compact table or bedside lamp.
