About this Museum

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is the largest art museum in the western United States. Its collections contain a substantial body of work from all over the world, and the museum is especially regarded for its Asian, Latin American, and Islamic art holdings. LACMA’s Decorative Arts and Design department contains European and American objects from the medieval period to the present, with work from the Arts & Crafts movement and Californian Modern design being particularly well represented.

Although it has roots in the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science & Art, which was established in 1910, LACMA was only formally established as a separate, arts-focused institution in 1961. Today, its seven-building complex stands on twenty acres in the heart of Los Angeles and is in the midst of a ten-year expansion and renovation designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop.
