He has sublimated my gaze for years, from childhood until today ”, José Nicolás Publication:" Chad 1980-1997 ", José Nicolás, preface Pierre Haski, Imogene Editions, Paris, 2018 Exhibitions: - Chad de los Héroes Anónimos, Union of Photographers Professionals, Paris (February 1 to 27, 2022) - Chad 1980-1997, Espace Photo du Perceche, Bellême (November 17, 2018 - January 13, 2019) “My connection with Chad goes back to my childhood. At the beginning of the 1960s, with my military father, we land in Faya-Largeau, capital of northern Chad, known as Borkou-Ennedi-Tibsti. An immense territory (600,350 square kilometers) for seventy thousand inhabitants. I remember a life full of sweetness, where time had no control over us, where I fully lived this freedom with the joy of innocence. I returned to Chad in 1978. As a paratrooper, I participated in the evacuation of European citizens during the violent fighting between the different Chadian factions, and there were many. Two years later, with my unit, we were nomads for four months in the east, in Abéché, and then near Lake Chad in Mao. Magic moments. Then I dedicate myself with my camera to a pleasure of curiosity and contemplation that will never abandon me. These are my first images of Chad. Other stays follow each other until the end of the 1990s. I go there as a logistics for Médecins du Monde and Hôpital Sans Frontières (1983), then Supa since 1984. I cover the Libyan attack of N'Djamena in 1986 and the defeat of the armored vehicles of Gaddafi in the battle of Ouadi Doum in 1987. That year I had the joy of finding Faya-Largeau, who had remained as I had known in my childhood. I photographed this desert town with intense pleasure at the risk of being forgotten by my journalist colleagues ... In 1990, the world witnessed Hissène's fall and the taking of power by Idriss Deby. Finally, in 1997, for action against hunger, I traveled through the desert areas of this country, photographing, free of all professional bonds. I explode to my wide the places now forgotten by the news. If my trips have always taken me over the capital, I wanted to gather these archival images to pay tribute to this country. »José Nicolás
