Scheublin & Lindeman

Dutch designers Lotty Lindeman (born 1980, Hoogkarspel) and Wouter Scheublin (born 1979, Gouda) met during their studies at the Design Academy Eindhoven. Scheublin earned his Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design from the University of Technology, Delft in 2002), before earning a second Bachelor’s in Design from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2004. Lindeman also completed a Bachelor in Design at the academy, graduating in 2006.

The duo initially established their own independent studios, in Lexmond, the Netherlands in 2006. In the early years of their careers, Lindeman worked in product development in ceramics and textiles at Piet Hein Eek and was involved in the first shows of the designer collective the Dutch Invertuals, during which she debuted her Tentlamp (2008) and Tassenkast (2009) in Milan. Scheublin worked initially in product development and 3D modeling for Joris Laarman, amongst others. His Frame Chair (2008) was produced by Established & Sons and also launched in Milan. Both designers have held guest teaching positions at the Technical University in Eindhoven and the Design Academy Eindhoven, and Scheublin continues teaching at Artez Arnhem.

In 2011, Lindeman and Scheublin moved from their shared studio space in Lexmond to new studio premises in Eindhoven. In the years that followed, they began to work together on a range of projects. Their first collaborative design project was Chair (2011) and the designers found that they balanced each other extremely well, with Lindeman often providing the conceptual impetus, while Scheublin is more focused on technical detailing. As the designers say, “The process is best described as a tennis match, where the project switches between our desks and we have a fresh look at it each time it returns.” The duo held their first solo exhibition as a collective in 2014 in Milan during the Salone del Mobile. Scheublin & Lindeman was subsequently established as a collective design studio in 2015 in Eindhoven. Since then, their work has been exhibited in international shows in Milan, Miami, Basel, Paris, and Madrid. The studio’s aesthetic is governed by a familiar visual language, familiar forms, that are re-conceived in ways that provide a subtle surprise and make the viewer take a closer look. The designs are made with a love of construction and a refined sense of material.
