Danish Coffee Table with Veneered Top on Metal Legs, 1960s

A Danish coffee table from the 1960s, representing the golden era of Scandinavian design. Its low, horizontal silhouette embodies the aesthetic principles of the period — a piece that organises space rather than dominating it, serving as a calm focal point within the room.

The construction centres on an elongated rectangular top finished in veneer, supported by four legs. The interplay between the warm tone of the wood and the dark legs creates a striking contrast, characteristic of Danish modernism from this decade. The proportions of the top — stretched and relatively narrow — lend the piece a visual lightness despite its solid build. The modest height ensures the table remains visually unobtrusive.

The 1960s marked the period when Danish design gained worldwide recognition. Designers and manufacturers developed a distinctive formal language — simple yet never cold, functional yet attentive to detail. Furniture from this era combined craft precision with industrial repeatability, making well-designed objects accessible to a broader audience. The pairing of wood with metal, evident in this table, reflects the contemporary exploration of new material combinations that defined mid-century modern aesthetics.

The elongated surface works equally well in front of a sofa or along a wall as an occasional console. It accommodates books, albums, or decorative objects while maintaining an orderly appearance. The low profile makes this coffee table particularly suited to arrangements with low-slung seating typical of mid-century interiors.

The condition is assessed as good. The surface displays minor scratches and slight chips. Small losses have been filled as part of conservation work. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
