Important and Rare Oil Painting of Dubrovnik Walls and the Bokar Fortress, 1930’s
Located partly at the top of a steep cliff separated from the mainland, on the southwest corner of Dubrovnik’s city walls,the Bokar Fortress was built in 15th century in one of the main strategic places, defending the sea access to the western section of the walls and the western entrance to the city.
It was considered as the key point of defence of the western sea as well as a land approach to the town as well as a beautiful piece of medieval fortification architecture. The best view is across the Pile Bay from the St. Lawrence Fortress.
The fort was designed by the Florentine architect Michelozzo di Bartolomeo Michelozzi as a semicircular two-story building, considered nowadays to be one of the oldest casemented forts in Europe.
Due to its attractive look, it is often taken as an example of functional as well as a beautiful piece of Medieval fortification architecture. .
The construction of the fortress began in 1461 according to the design of Florentine architect Michelozzo di Bartolomeo Michelozzi, who conceived it as a casemate fortress with radially placed cannon niches, with two levels in the interior and an open platform on top. This semicircular two-story building, considered nowadays to be one of the oldest casemented forts in Europe.
The construction was significantly delayed, and it was not until 1570 that it was upgraded according to the proposal of the military engineer Antonio Ferramolin from Bergamo, who stayed in Dubrovnik in 1538 and created several variants of the reconstruction and upgrade of the walls. This intervention gave Bokar its present appearance.
